Our last meeting was on Thursday 12 May 2016 and included the Annual Meeting, during which Carolyn Brown gave us the President's Report covering the events over the last year – and what a varied and exciting year it was! We had an interesting mix of speakers covering topics including a thought provoking talk about how slaves in America used quilting skills as a code for communication; chocolate sampling, yummy, and a talk by Hotel Chocolat; Dame Mary Fagan regaled us with stories, some humorous, from her time as Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire and we ended the year with an entertaining and hilarious talk from John Pitman about village life in the 1940s – a trip down memory lane for some and enlightening for others! It was also a very special year for the WI as it was the Centenary Year in 2015 and many of our members participated in celebration events including the Garden Party at Buckingham Palace attended by Jane Hodgson and the Annual Meeting at the Royal Albert Hall attended by Kate Baylis along with The Queen, The Princess Royal and The Countess of Wessex! There were also many local celebrations and WIs within the Basingstoke Group were asked to craft a square depicting their local WI – Ann Evans beautifully crafted our square depicting various landmarks in the village including the duck pond. North Waltham WI also celebrated its’ 80th birthday in March 2016 with a party and a fashion parade with some of our members being the very glamorous models. Here’s to the next 80 years!!
There have been some changes in the WI Committee for the coming year – Jane Hodgson moved onto pastures new in October 2015. Linda Cole stood down after many years as the minute’s secretary – how she ever managed to keep up with some of our discussions is beyond me, but she did! Sheila Baker also stood down after many years involvement with the committee. Thank you to all of you for all your hard work, commitment and willingness to help over the last few years. The current members of the WI Committee are: Carolyn Brown, President; Carol Rowe, Vice President; Helen Frizell, Correspondence Secretary; Debbie Wilby, Minutes Secretary; Sally Wall, Treasurer; Barbara Purkiss, Programme and Linda Temple, Raffle.
As we start another WI year we can look forward to an interesting variety of topics including Great Ormond Street Hospital, the Trussell Trust and how to carve vegetables/fruit/soap.
Wednesday 8th June 2016: visit to Wild Flower Turf at Ash Warren when we will have a walk and talk around the fields looking at the wild flowers and hearing about the turf and where it goes. We are meeting at the farm at 6.30pm. Sensible shoes will be required but fingers crossed the weather will be sunny so we don’t need wet weather gear!
Thursday 14 July 2016: Garden Party to be held at The Foxes Den, Mary Lane. Our speaker will be Alick Jones, a professional biologist, who will be giving us hints and tips on how to make our gardens more wildlife friendly, using the host garden as an example. Hopefully it will be a lovely summer evening so we can enjoy our strawberries and cream outside, so don’t forget to bring a chair, bowl, spoon and glass. If wet we will still have the meeting at The Foxes Den but view the garden from inside!!
There is no WI meeting in August.
Thursday 8 September 2016: Hearing Dogs for the Deaf – details to follow.
Why not come and join us as a guest, a potential new member, or as someone who is interested in listening to a particular speaker? You will always be very welcome. If anyone would like to come along or would like more details please contact Carolyn Brown email@example.com
