WI - Nov 2019

On the 14th November, we had the pleasure of listening to Steve describe the very important work of Blood Bikes.

Did you think they were employed by health services? … Wrong, they are all volunteers.  Did you think they only transported blood? … Wrong, they also transport human baby milk urgent medical samples and essential medical items.  Just in case you wondered if they take over other paid workers, they don’t. Blood Bikes is complimentary to the Blood Service

Steve is part of the group, SERV Wessex, who provide a free transportation service for NHS Hospitals and Dialysis Units in Hampshire Dorset and South Wiltshire. Hants Air Ambulance. They deliver all year; evening and overnight on weekdays, day and night on weekends and public holidays. Also sometimes they deliver heart monitors and human baby milk to neonatal clinics during office hours, plus a continuous supply of blood and plasma to Air Ambulance and Critical Care cars at Thruxton

They need Riders, Drivers, Controllers (call operators), Fundraisers and General Administration volunteers to operate their service as they do not receive any fees or funding. The riders using their own bikes even provide their own fuel. Can you imagine how much this saves NHS in taxis and couriers?  It is estimated SERV Wessex alone saved  NHS £135,000 in 2018 by 1,600 deliveries over 138,000miles.

A bikers account of a shift presented their role as pretty basic, but as the air ambulance doctor commented; without the blood they deliver, some patients would die!
