The Village Trust has adapted the area of Cuckoo Meadow between the BMX track and Steventon Road grass bank to create an overflow car park. This will be used to alleviate car park congestion during school term time and for events such as the annual Big Lunch. A reinforcing mesh has been laid over the ground; the grass will grow through this mesh and then obscure it.
To minimise wear and tear to the surface, and enable one-way vehicle flow to avoid problems at the entry/exit point, the overflow area will be reserved for staff of the Primary School and Pre-School only. Parents dropping off and collecting children will be restricted to use of the existing main car park. Please respect this usage pattern; it is a condition of approval for the project, which has been funded by a mixture of grants from Basingstoke & Deane borough council, school parents, external fund providers and Village Trust reserves. The Trust is grateful to all organisations that have contributed to this programme.
The existing chain barrier will be open for authorised use of the overflow region in term time, with closure once a fortnight to facilitate routine grass cutting. A new barrier will be constructed at the far end of the car park to control access to the main Meadow. We are also planning some refurbishment of the vehicle access gates to the Play Area and other safety barriers around the site.
Many thanks are due to the working party that prepared the ground for this conversion.
As a side issue, during the school holidays, we have commissioned a redecoration programme in the Rathbone Pavilion; this is due for completion by the end of July.
