At our last meeting on the 8th April 2021 we were joined by Jo Hatton from Linking Environment and Farming (LEAF) who gave us a very interesting talk on their work. LEAF is the leading organisation delivering more sustainable food and farming, working with farmers, the food industry, scientists and consumers. Their work with farmers is based on Integrated Farm Management which is site specific and includes looking at the best way of using both traditional methods and modern technology to increase productivity and, at the same time, protecting the environment. Another part of LEAFs work is Farmer Time which allows farmers to communicate directly with schools. Over 300 schools are already signed up and farmers are educating children on food production, farming and the environment. This year has been different for them, as for many other organisations, and they have had to adapt their working practices. Schools would usually visit a farm as part of their education, however, this hasn’t been possible this year so the sessions have taken place using Zoom – an advantage of this is that the farmer and children can enjoy more regular sessions. Another aspect of LEAFs work is LEAF Marque which is an environmental assurance system recognising more sustainable farmed product. 45% of UK grown fruit and vegetables are grown by LEAF Marque certified businesses. LEAF Marque products can be identified by their logo – so something to look for when doing our food shopping.
Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and the government and NFWI restrictions and guidelines, our meetings continue to be held by Zoom:
